5 easy and delicious recipes inspired by Chinatown

5 easy and delicious recipes inspired by Chinatown

Feeling a little lost in the kitchen and missing the vibrant tastes of Asian cooking provided by the restaurants of Chinatown London? Well, don’t fear, because we have you covered. We bring to you five tasty recipes showcasing a delicious mix of fresh and hearty dishes, packed with Asian flavours and all easy to cook from the comfort of your own home. Some of these come from our very favourite London foodies who we challenged to re-create their most-missed Chinatown dish for our #BringingChinatownHome campaign. Follow the links for the full recipes.

Homemade Ban Mian by Rasa Sayang

The cooks at authentic Malaysian and Singaporean spot Rasa Sayang have been experimenting in their home kitchens and whipping up some beautiful new dishes for the public to try at home. Have a look at their feed for a simple recipe of zingy Vietnamese Grilled Lamb Chops, or devour something more hearty and nourishing by cooking Homemade Ban Mian, a warming soup filled with handmade noodles and topped with minced chicken and leafy greens.

XU’s Xian Bing by Scott Can Eat

Scott Can Eat really missed Chinatown London’s Taiwanese hotspot XU, so he developed a recipe for their moreishly good Xian Bings ! These crispy pan-fried dumplings packed with pork, ginger, soy sauce and garlic, are surprisingly easy to make. Have a look for yourself.

Baked Pork Chop Rice by Steph YT

With a little help from her godfather in Hong Kong, Steph Yt managed to re-create one of her favourite comfort foods from Hong Kong’s famous Cha Chaan Tengs (Hong Kong-style cafés) – Baked Pork Chop Rice. On top of warming rice, the tangy and umami-rich aroma of the sauce is balanced by flavourful pork. Click through to find full recipe.

Homemade Taiwanese Fried Chicken Bao by Mai of London Food

Our friends over at Good Friend Chicken are still working away to create their Taiwanese fried chicken – along with offering free meals to London’s frontline workers! But, if you are not in the vicinity and able to pick up a crispy piece of chicken, then why not have a go at making it yourself? Mai of London Food tucked hers into some bouncy bao buns topped with siracha mayo and chicken flakes, and it is just ever so delightful. Have a look at her website for the full recipe.

Mapo Tofu by Shu Lin

We challenged British-Chinese vlogger Shu Lin to bring Chinatown home and create a simple Chinatown dish and she chose Mapo Tofu ! Sichuan food is known for its excitingly pungent and aromatic flavours, and if you can manage to get your hands on some of those delicious Sichuan peppercorns, then crush them up and add them into this tasty dish. If you don’t fancy making your own, our favourite Sichuan spot in Chinatown Jin Li is still open for delivery.
